Ideas vs Strategy

This past week I did a call with 23+ top performing agents. Most are doing 100+ deals or a $100+ mm in closed sales volume. Many are doing much more.

Like all agents... everyone is incessantly thinking someone else might have a better idea on how to do business.

As each member of the group took their turn sharing "ideas" and asking questions of the group...

It became readily apparent that there is a big distinction between ideas and strategy.

Every agent should have a clearly defined and articulated strategy for how they want to do business. And this strategy needs to be aligned with your talents, skills and resources. Only then can you begin to leverage what you do best.

I want to share the note I sent to this group after the call because I think everyone can benefit from it.

Hopefully, today was a great opportunity to see where your thinking lines up in relation to your peers.

You are not okay...

It is important to understand that you are not okay on the inside.

In fact you are probably a mess and lost and don't want to admit it.

No need to worry or panic.

WE ARE ALL IN THIS PLACE!!

And it is the perfect place to be.

You are not okay on the inside because you have experienced life in the past in a way that disturbed your inner world.

Whether it was the perception of a "bad" thing happening to you or a "bad" thing you did... negative energy was stored in your body in that moment that has never been fully dealt with or released.

This is why you get triggered at times by certain events or situations that are unfolding in your present day life.

This is what is running your life.

This stored negative energy is the source of your fears, attachments and false hopes.

This stored negative energy is also what leads you to form your personal preferences of what you like and don't like.

And fulfilling these personal preferences are your attempt at making yourself feel better.

You simply need the outside world to cooperate by doing its part by giving you exactly what you want and not giving you what you don't want.

A small ask... indeed.

Rather than dealing with the source of the problem... your inner world...

You decide to put your attention and consciousness on the outside world.

HINT: Not a great idea.

By continually focusing on the problem itself... you end up reinforcing the problem.

Whether it be lack of money or love or health or career or fun... etc.

You imagine if you can get enough money in the bank or find the person of your dreams or drop 30 extra pounds or land an amazing job or travel around the world... everything will be okay and you will be fixed!!

As a result you keep directing your energies and efforts externally as if this is the thing that will make a positive lasting change in your life.

AND THIS IS WHY YOU ARE NOT OKAY!!

The topic of goals is a great way to illustrate the points above: 

You set goals thinking if you can achieve them... you are going to feel better on the inside. This idea excites and energizes you.

Let's look at the reality of what happens...

You set a goal and achieve it.

How long does the thrill of victory really last?

How long does it take until your happiness is conditional on achieving the next goal and the next goal and the next goal?

You know exactly what I am talking about.

Nothing really changes because you are not working on the source of the problem - your inner world.

And what happens when you don't achieve your goal?

You begin to think you must be doing something wrong and/ or something is wrong with you.

How does that make you feel on the inside?

Either way, whether you achieve your goals or not...

Most of the time you are worrying about not getting what you want or worrying about getting what you don't want.

PS You don't really want to achieve the goal you set. What you really want is the feeling you associate with reaching your goal!!

Here is the irony of all this...

What you really want...

The feeling...

Already exists inside of you right now.

You just don't know how to tap into it.

That is why I say you are a mess and lost.

Once you acknowledge this...

Everything can change.

You don't need to achieve anything to feel the way you really want to feel.

Inside of you there is a river of love, joy, and inner peace that is trying to flow up through you.

IT IS ALREADY THERE!!

However you have placed many rocks in this river with your fears, attachments, false hopes and personal preferences.

And these rocks are blocking the flow of positive energy that you can experience at any time!!

Doing more is not the answer.

All your actions to make the outside world conform to your preconceived notions of how the world needs to be...

POINTLESS!!

Now the big tease...

All of this can end right now.

You can feel great on the inside starting right now!!

The struggle...

The stress...

The suffering...

 Next Man Up

In the NFL there is a term called Next Man Up.

What this term refers to is...

When a starter gets hurt and cannot play... whoever is the "next man up" has to be ready to fill that spot. The team is counting on this person. During the course of the NFL season, players are going to get hurt and teams depend on the Next Man Up to do their parts. No team can be overly dependent on one star player.

There is no better example of this than Brock Purdy. This year Brock Purdy was the very last player selected in the NFL draft, the 262nd player taken. He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers. There is even a nickname for this honor - Mr. Irrelevant.

At the start of training camp, Brock was just hoping to get a sniff of ever being on the playing field as the third quarterback on the team. Thanks to injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppola... Brock found himself in the starting role as quarterback of the team late into the season.

And the team absolutely needed him to perform at a high level to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Yesterday...

Brock just won his 7th straight game, putting the 49ers in the NFC Conference Championship next week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The way he has handled this pressure and his play on the field have been truly extraordinary. However, this is what team is about. All teams have to deal with starters going down due to injury. This is not an isolated incident. Backup players have to be ready at all times. This is why everyone is in every meeting, every practice, every conditioning exercise... and everyone has to be prepared to play on a moment's notice. There are no excuses. Teams cannot exist otherwise.

Now let's look in real estate!!

If we take YOU, the team leader... out of the mix... what happens?

Who is the Next Person Up on your team?

We all know...

Without you...

You don't have a team!!

So... what is it that you have?

This is why player development is so important.

You have to build your bench of future producers. 

This includes mapping out your process for:

1. Hiring
2. Training/ Coaching
3. Accountability/ Performance Reviews
4. Terminations

This is a critical part of your Team Playbook.

In 2023 we are going to launch a Team Coaching Program. This is not going to be a lecture or workshop or presentation. This is going to be top team leaders getting together on a regular basis and working through all the situational issues you face on a regular basis. All topics will be up for discussion. My take on Social Media...

Social media is a great way to keep up to date with what is going on in people's lives, but remember you are only seeing the side that they are choosing to share...

Commenting and liking a photo on social media is not how you should be staying in touch with people. Building relationships with people means personal touch points- make the phone call!

But you can leverage the information you see on social media in building relationships with people...

The next time you see a Past Client of yours post about a trip or graduation, instead of commenting on their photo- give them a call 'I was just thinking about you and wanted to say hello, I cannot believe ______ graduated! What are their plans for next year..."
